Namal Uyana

Namal Uyana, bearing South East Asia's largest rose pink quartz mountain range steeped in rich legend,is situated about 159km north of colombo in the sleepy helmet of Ulpathgama, Galkiriyagama, in the Anuradhapura District.According to folklore,Moghul Emperor shah jehan had used pink quartz mined from this unique range,to build the world famous monument Taj Mahal .Today, this proud national heritage with ruins of an ancient vihara and rock enclaves has been declared an Archaeological Reserve by the Goverment, thank to the tireless efforts of Ven.Vanavasi Rahul Thero who made it his abode for meditation, some thirteen years ago. Naml Uyana boasts of a countless number of Na trees as well as other valuable trees like Ebony,Teak,Satinwood,Margose,Milla and panakka.

The long and arduous trek to the Rose Quartz Range winds through a shagy landscape of green that looks ethereal during the flowering season. The formation of Na trees points to the fact that it had truly been a park in ancienttimes.Namal Uyana, so rich in ancient heritage and bio divercity is worth a visit by all nature lovers,to enjoy its unsurpassed tranquil beauty. It could be reached by traveling upto Madatugama through Rangiri Dambulla on the Anuradhapura road.

Mulkirigala

Tangalle,on the south coast of Sri Lanka boasts some excellent tourist facilities. One such place is the Mulkirigala Temple-almmost a duplicate of the rock fortress of sigiriya. There is a defference though - because Mulkirigala does not have a place but several buildings layered on different levels of treacherouse rock The monastery is roughly 13 miles away from Tangalle and can be reached by vehicle alone a road that goes through Beliatte.Just off the road, looming through dense foliage, the rock of Mulkirigala rises 692ft in all its majestic gloru.

The rock temple is shrouded in the sands of time, its history dating back to thousands of years ago and one certainly gets that feeling when looking at the lovely murals, mellowed with age.there is a monasrery for the monks and the very surroundings of the temple offer absolute oneness with nature. The temple on the rock is certainly worth a glimpse into Sri Lanka's glorious past. Mulkirigala is an important part of this country's colourful history.

Haththicuchi Vihara

Haththicuchi Vihara is one of the four most well-developed and world renowned temples in the Anuradhapura era. It was also known as Haththicuchchi pabbaraya; which means rock temple. It was known in sinhala as Athkus Vehera, because the main rock in the complex resembles a tusker. The Haththicuchi Vihara happens to be the most  beautifuk arama complex in Sri Lanka. It has been a well developed site for over 1,300 years The one and only Buddha statue found in the premises is a reclining statue,Which is kept in a 'pilimageya' built in the kandy era. A lena (cave room) has been converted to make this pilimageya Another important building in the complex is the 'pohoya geya'(chapter house) Which was used by the monks for religious work. The semi-circular or oval shaped building is different from other structures and adds beauty to the place.Meditation chambers have been located around the forest to provide calm and quiet surroundings for the monks to meditate. You should visit this wonderful place so that you could feast your own eyes to the glorious history of this beautiful country.

          English translation

Mother Lanka we salute Thee!
Plenteous in prosperity, Thou,
Beauteous in grace and love,
Laden with grain and luscious fruit,
And fragrant flowers of radiant hue,
Giver of life and all good things,
Our land of joy and victory,
Receive our gratefull praise sublime,
Lanka! we worship Thee.
Thou gavest us Knowledge and Truth,
Thou art our strength and inward faith,
Our light divine and sentient being,
Breath of life and liberation.
Grant us, bondage free, inspiration.
Inspire us for ever.
In wisdom and strength renewed,
Ill-will, hatred, strife all ended,
In love enfolded, a mighty nation
Marching onward, all as one,
Lead us, Mother, to fullest freedom.
